DOVER TOWNSHIP -- The embrace Toms River North senior tailback Jay Gold
and Toms River East senior quarterback Colin Gaynor gave each other
following the conclusion of the Mariners' 38-17 victory over the Raiders
last night in a Shore American Division game at Toms River North's Gernerd
Field was probably a fitting way for both to end their careers.
Gold, Toms River North's all-time leading rusher, and Gaynor, Toms River
East's standout record-setting quarterback, showed why they have been two
of the Shore's best players the last three years last night.
Gaynor, who had 6,619 yards passing in his career, threw for 141 yards
while Gold, who ran for 3,318 yards in his career, had 172 yards and two
TDs last night.
"Colin's the offensive player of the year in my book," Gold
said. "I've been friends with Colin since I was 9. I played baseball
with him.
"I have nothing but respect for Colin. He's one of the friendliest
kids around here. We both got respect for each other."
"Jay's awesome. He was definitely the better player tonight,"
Gaynor said.
North (7-3, 5-2) led just 19-17 following a 14-yard TD run by East's
Marcus Baldaccini late in the third quarter. But then the Mariners motored
63 yards in seven plays. Gold's 34-yard run on a third-and-2 was the key
play, and he capped the march four plays later, when he blasted in from
the 10 to give the Mariners a a 25-17 lead.
Then, following his recovery of a fumble at the Raiders' 1 on the
ensuing kickoff, senior fullback Jamie Miller (80 yards and two touchdowns
on 18 carries), plowed over from the 1 to make it 31-17.
Quarterback Ken Macchiaverna's 1-yard run with 46 seconds left
concluded a 52-yard, 11-play drive that was sparked by Gold's 16-yard run.
"I'm shedding a couple of tears already," Gold said.
"It's sad to be ending my career, but it's also a great feeling to be
getting the win on our home field.
"It's pretty sad," Gaynor said. "I feel like I've had a
great career here, a lot of great teammates and coaches. I have a lot to
be thankful for."
