DOVER TOWNSHIP -- Toms River East put on a spectacular aerial display
last night against Marlboro, as quarterback Colin Gaynor completed 12 of
14 passes for 306 yards and six touchdowns to lead the host Raiders to a
49-0 victory.
The Raiders improved to 5-1 both overall and in the Shore Conference's
American Division. Marlboro dropped to 0-6.
Gaynor completed passes to seven different receivers, with six
different Raiders scoring touchdowns.
"That's the first time I can remember coming off the break and
executing so well," said East coach Frank D'Alonzo, whose team had
a bye last week. "We wanted to spread it around and get the younger
players involved."
Junior Jason DeGennaro led the Raiders' receiving corps with four
catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns, while sophomores Dan McDonough
and Chris Taylor each had a touchdown catch.
Gaynor, though, looked to seniors Jason Tusi and Damon Barr to get
the Raiders rolling. After East recovered a Marlboro fumble, Tusi put
the Raiders ahead 7-0 just 2:35 into the game by catching a 12-yard
touchdown in the middle of the end zone. Barr later made it 14-0 with a
10-yard touchdown catch over the middle early in the second quarter.
East scored two more times in just three plays before halftime.
Following a Marlboro possession that took 6:42 off the clock, Gaynor
needed just 13 seconds to hurl a 66-yard touchdown strike to DeGennaro
for a 21-0 lead. On East's next possession, Gaynor threw a short pass to
Taylor, who turned upfield and went 21 yards for a touchdown and a 28-0
lead.
"I know I needed the break to get my knee back," said
DeGennaro, who had suffered a sprained knee in East's previous game
against Brick. "I think it was relaxing for everybody."
East notched its lone rushing touchdown early in the third quarter
when lineman Jeff Pluta was inserted at fullback and scored on a 1-yard
plunge to give the Raiders a 35-0 lead.
"Coach D'Alonzo said all week he was going to try and get me a
touchdown," said the 6-foot-3, 260-pound Pluta. "There aren't
many kids who can tackle me if I get the ball."
Linebacker Michael Angelo led the Raiders' defense with two sacks and
a fumble recovery.
