POINT PLEASANT -- It won't go down as one of the most impressive
victories in Manasquan history but coach Vic Kubu will take it.
"We did not play very well," he said after the Warriors'
19-13 Shore Conference Liberty Division conquest of Point Boro
yesterday. "Our heads are a little too big for our helmets."
The Warriors struggled to their fourth victory in four outings. They
fell behind 6-0 late in the first quarter, but rallied with two
touchdowns by senior running back Drew Morgan.
"We did not make tackles," Kubu said. "We were bad. We
gave up two sacks right off the bat. We dropped passes -- three in the
first half. We should have been up 21-6 at halftime."
"We were very shaky in the first half," Morgan said.
"We did not play to our potential. Those are plays you don't see in
Manasquan football."
Manasquan comes off back-to-back 12-0 seasons.
"We think we are better than we are," Morgan said. "We
think we are last year's team. We have to be our own team. You can't
play in the past."
The Warriors trailed the Panthers 6-0 late in the first quarter.
The Panthers received a break when Manasquan punter Gene Kelly was
dropped for a 10-yard loss to the Warriors' 6-yard line because of a
high snap from center.
Point Boro took advantage of the gift, grabbing a 6-0 lead with 4:18
left in the opening quarter on a 1-yard run by Jay Cipolla on
fourth-and-goal.
Manasquan's Troy Morgan intercepted a Justin Civile pass, setting up
an 85-yard, 14-play scoring drive that devoured nearly eight minutes.
Drew Morgan capped the march with a three-yard run on a
fourth-and-two play with 5:42 left in the first half, tying the game at
six. Andrew Sigrist's extra-point attempt sailed wide to the left.
A Rich Lapinski two-yard run put Manasquan in front 12-6 with 4:30
left in the third quarter, then Drew Morgan stretched the lead to 19-6,
racing 38 yards with 10:56 left in the game.
The Panthers, who blocked the extra-point attempt, then scored the
game's final touchdown when Civile flipped a 12-yard pass to Chris
Lokerson with 14 seconds to play.
